DIY LEGO iPhone Dash Mount

Updated on 11/7/2011 for the iPhone 4S. This is my second custom iPhone dashboard mount. My first one was made mostly from aluminum and held the iPhone in the horizontal position which made the iPod feature difficult to use. So I made a new dashboard mount to hold my iPhone in the vertical position. This time I decided to make it out of Legos!

I mostly used pieces from Technic sets plus a few special pieces from my Bionical figures. I didn’t have to use any glue, so all the Lego fans out there can rest easy tonight.

Check out this great list of 25 DIY iPhone Docks and Stands.

Chevy S10

This is the 5th or 6th revision for my Chevy S10. I made it for the iPhone 4S, but it also works with my old 3GS. It snaps into a seam at the top of my dash using a pair of Bionical arm/leg joints. There is a hook in the middle of the base to hold the dock cable when it isn’t in use. I can push the iPhone up under the 45º hook at the top and then rest it back down behind the two 90º hooks at the bottom. The top hook has a spring at the back of the lever to keep pressure on the top of the iPhone and hold it in place. After a trip to the Lego store at the local mall, I was finally able to find almost every piece in black. Only the Bionical leg joints and a few of the small connecting pieces remain in gray, which might not even exist in black. The quest continues…

Old Versions for Chevy S10

I used two Bionical claws to grip the top of the iPhone in these older models.

BMW

I made this version for my wife’s BMW. It snaps into a vent using another pair of the Bionical arm/leg joint pieces. It holds the phone up above the vent, allowing us to still use the vent for AC and heat. It would be pretty easy to alter the design to hang the iPhone below the vent in vehicles where the radio wouldn’t be blocked.

I’m not the only adult who still plays with Legos.
