Gingerbread House

I designed and built this life-sized gingerbread house for the Southland Mall in Marion, OH back in October of 2002. The culinary arts class at the local JVS made gingerbread houses that year, and I made the giant gingerbread house to serve as a display area for the smaller houses, as well as Santa’s house for photos at Christmas.

The walls are made from thick insulation foam that I carved to look like giant graham crackers. The roof tiles are made from thinner insulation foam painted to look like giant Necco wafers. I painted the smooth side of bubble wrap and covered flower pots with it to look like big gumdrops. I made oversized lollypops by placing two plastic bowls back to back, or face to face, and mounted them on PVC pipe. The licorice tree is made from some kind of black plastic tubing wrapped around a center pole and painted red.
