BrainStorm Robot Costume Construction

My most elaborate costume yet: BrainStorm! The Super Villain Robot. I began designing the costume in November of 2011, then started the construction in January of 2012.

I will wear BrainStorm at MARcon, a fantasy & science fiction convention in Columbus, OH, on April 7, 2012 and also at the Midwest Haunters Convention in Columbus, OH, on June 9, 2012.

In order to conceal my body and create the illusion of a free standing robot, I will be hidden between the layers of his super villain cape so you won’t see me at all. My face will be projected onto a screen which I can move around using two servos, allowing the robot to look around the room. The feet light up with each step.

Halloween 2011

The 2011 Halloween season kept me quite busy. I joined a professional haunted house in Dublin, OH called The Scare-A-Torium. I made tons of great new friends, and had a fantastic time scaring the customers every weekend for the entire month of October. I wore “The Experiment” as my costume and continued to make changes and improvements over the course of the month. Read more »

Midwest Haunters Convention 2011

Once again, I attended the Midwest Haunters Convention in Columbus, OH. I hung out with Todd at the Fearscape Studios booth during the day on Saturday, June 4 and then attended the Masquerade Ball that night. I wore my recently updated costume called ‘The Experiment‘. I am very proud to have been selected as one of ten people for the Scariest Character Contest, and for the second time in my MHC history, I came in 2nd place! (The other time was with Jumbo the Clown at MHC 2009.) Seriously now, who do I have to throw in a deep pit in my basement to win 1st place in this costume contest?? I also want to congratulate The Tooth Fairy for winning the Ms. Scary Pageant. She works at a haunt in Cleveland, and her costume was sweet!

MARCon 46 2011

I attended my first MARCon (Multiple Alternative Realities Convention) in Columbus, OH on May 28, 2011. The theme for this year’s MARCon was “steampunk”, which happened to be the style and inspiration of my latest costume, called The Experiment. I think of it as Frankenstein’s monster with a steampunk twist. I entered the Masquerade contest and was awarded the “Truly F#%*ing Creepy Judges’ Choice Award”. I like that.

The Experiment Costume Updated 2011

This is the first time I’ve revisited a past costume to make changes and improvements. When I made The Experiment back in October of 2009, I also turned my garage into a haunted house for Halloween. So when I got to the end of the design process on the costume, I had run out of time and energy, and the one piece blue jumpsuit was good enough to finish it off. Because I’ve never worn this costume to any of the Halloween conventions yet, I decided it would be a good one to focus my annual creative energies on, and try to bring it up to the same level of awesome as my other costumes. I think of this costume as a steampunk Frankenstein’s monster.
